The 32nd General Chapter of the Augustinians of the Assumption has begun in Rome, Italy. From May· 2nd- 23rd, 2011 participants, lay and religious, have gathered from all over the world to reflect and dialogue on their life as Assumptionists (lay and religious), their ministries in light of available resources and the needs of the Church and their organizational structure and governance which will assure the congregation’s future vitality.
The official representatives of the North American Province at this chapter include: Fr. Marcel Poirier, A.A., provincial, Fr. Bernard Holzer, A.A., delegate and provincial delegate for the Philippines, Fr. John Franck, A.A., delegate and vocation director, and Mr. Claude Lamontagne, lay delegate.

We have come to the end of the 32nd General Chapter of the Augustinians of the Assumption. Reflecting on the experience bears witness to the goodness of God and most especially, the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit and the inspirational presence of our founder Venerable Emmanuel d’Alzon.
What was most evident at the outset was the great diversity of who we are as Assumptionists. Though French was the dominant language, Spanish, Swahili, Romanian, Bulgarian, Portuguese, Russian, Dutch or Flemish and English, among others, kept the translators ‘on their toes’ to say the least.

 Let us have passion for the Kingdom!
Dear Brothers,
The Chapter, before all else, has been a moment of grace and of peace. I want to thank each of you for the quality of your participation.·· We were able to obtain a large consensus on most of the questions and themes which we treated: that is a sign in itself of our communion. We also prayed with conviction and with warmth and our beautiful liturgies remind us how we are men of faith.· We have thought also of our brothers and friends, the most disfavored and the weakest. We are solidaire of the world in which we live.

 Mobilize to last

Contrary to popular opinion, a General Chapter does not spend most of its time making decisions. Rather, the time is spent selecting orientations for the Congregation. Sometimes, the Chapter is satisfied with working on a submitted text and returning it to its author for further elucidation.. That is what happened these days with the document on “Mobilizing Works”. This is a new expression at the Assumption having appeared at the Council of Congregation of 2009. It was thought that the 32nd General Chapter would not opt for a few “apostolic orientations” as it had in 2005 for Asia, the Near East Mission and youth and vocations but would rather recognize certain provincial apostolates as capable of “rallying” (mobilizing) the interest of the Congregation.

 Continental Drift?
To the surprise of many Chapter members,
the first step in the reform of our “community organization”, dealing with the competencies and the functioning of the General government, was adopted by the Chapter without any difficulty (see numbers 7 and 10 of the Chapter Diary). But this reform has a second part, dealing with the territorial reorganization of the Congregation. And here, things seem to be less easy.
