This past August 28 four young Vietnamese (Duong, Duc, Nam and Tai) made their first vows in the congregation. It was an important event because it was the very first time that young Assumptionists pronounced their first vows in Vietnam.
The entire Assumption Family rented a bus for 50 to make the trip from Saigon to the novitiate some 50 miles away; there were Assumptionist brothers and Oblate Sisters, but also postulants and candidates.

Pope Benedict XVI focused on Africa again in October, when he presided at the Second Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops. The event was aimed at finding ways Africa could overcome lingering conflicts and seek reconciliation, justice and peace.
The last issue of L'Assomption et ses oeuvres (Assumption and its Ministries), an international French quarterly, presented a series of articles on the presence of the Assumption on the African continent. Once upon a time, there was a group of eight young Assumptionists from Chile (one of them, a religious) who had a dream: to take part in the national pilgrimage of Lourdes in France and to learn more about the Assumption. At the outset, the situation was very difficult for them, given the fact that a trip as big as this one was beyond their means. Nevertheless, God’s help, their own work and the desire to reach their goal pushed them to move forward… Finally, after a great deal of effort, they were successful and set out on their pilgrimage. And now these same young people have returned to share a bit of their experience.

From August 27-29 the fifth annual Festival of the Bible was held at the
Assumptionist shrine and spiritual center in Quebec City, Montmartre canadien.
The theme of this fifth festival, "L’écologie de la Bible à nos jours" ("Ecology
of the Bible to our days"), opened four major axes of reflection based on
Scriptural and Church teaching to provide a better understanding of the
ecological crisis that calls for a spirituality of Creation. Whether in plenary
conferences or workshops, the festival was an opportunity to discover much, both
scientific and pastoral, about the theme. There were personal witnesses and
well-prepared celebrations that nourished one's faith.

From August 25-29, over 300 lay-people and religious gathered at the Assumptionist conference center near Lyon, France, to participate in the sixth session of the Assumptionist Summer "University" series (dating back to 2001). This year's topic was of particular relevance to world events: "The Mediterranean: Mother of Humanity - from one shore to the other." Does this vast sea, home to great religions and cultures (Jerusalem, Athens, Rome, Alexandria, Istanbul) act as a link or as an impassable abyss?

Leaving all that is familiar – your home, your family and friends, and your culture – creates an environment that encourages profound reflection, new perspectives and personal transformation, says Fr. John Franck, A.A. ’70. For many of the hundreds of Assumption students and alumni who have participated in the College’s annual Mexico Mission trips, those changes have lasted a lifetime. This year the Mexico Mission program is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
