Fr. Julio Navarro, A.A., Vicar General and Postulator for the Cause of Fr. d’Alzon, talks about the Status of the Beatification Process, Rome - February, 2011

You were asked to be the postulator for the cause of Fr. d’Alzon beatification. How has this experience affected you personally?

This experience has been extremely rich for me. That is true in at least three ways. First, it has allowed me to know Fr. d’Alzon much better, his personality, his spirituality, the example of his holiness, and in addition to knowing him better, I believe I admire him and love him much more. Another aspect has to do with the task of being the postulator itself which has forced me to learn, study, go to courses, especially in the area of canon law, in order to understand the juridical steps required by the Church.

And, thirdly, I have had to investigate several cases which individuals have presented as miracles. Perhaps, this has been the most interesting, since I have received the testimony of people who are convinced, whatever the doctors may say,that they have been cured thanks to the prayer and the intercession of Fr. Emmanuel d’Alzon.

Where are we right now with regard to the process of beatification?

Fr. d’Alzon was declared “Venerable” by Pope John Paul II in 1991, that is to say, the Church officially recognized, after a long and thorough examination of his life and writings, that this Servant of God lived the Christian virtues and the evangelical counsels in a distinguished, exemplary, and even heroic manner. Now the next step is to demonstrate before the proper authorities of the Church the existence of a miracle attributable to Fr. d’Alzon. I am impressed by the number of people who have written to us indicating that they have received this or that favor thanks to the intercession of Fr. d’Alzon. It is God who performs miracles. And he does so freely, neither because of our merits nor because we may have prayed a lot or too little. However, in the Catholic Church, we have the conviction of faith that the Virgin Mary, the saints, and our loved ones who are in God’s presence can intercede for us so that the Lord may grant us what we ask for.

The miracles which the Church tends to recognize (though not exclusively) are healings of incurable illnesses. It must be shown by medical testimony that there is no scientific explanation, that the healing took place immediately and definitively (and lasts at least five years) and that it was explicitly requested with prayer (for example, during a novena) through the intercession of the Servant of God.

We have just ended the commemoration of the bicentennial of the birth of Fr. d’Alzon. Has this celebration affected the cause of Fr. d’Alzon’s beatification and, if so, how?

Yes, this bicentennial year has been a privileged opportunity to make Fr. d’Alzon better known. What is new, I think, has been the accent placed on his holiness. In the past we have insisted a lot on the person of Fr. d’Alzon as a great apostle of the 19th century, or as an educator, or as a founder of two religious congregations (the Assumptionists and the Oblates of the Assumption), or as fighter and defender of the rights of the Church in a society hostile to them. This year we have tried to know him better and make him better known as a ‘holy’ man, a model of holiness for the religious who follow him, but also for lay-people who are inspired by his spirituality. His own path of holiness, which bears witness to moments of radical decision, crises of suffering, moments of renunciation and of placing himself willingly into God’s hands continues to be an example of holiness.

What are some of the achievements that you have seen in recent years with regard to the process of beatification?

Precisely in what I have just spoken about. In the end what the Church asks of us is not so much the demonstration of a miracle but evidence that we truly believe in the holiness of Fr. Emmanuel d’Alzon and that we are convinced in his power of intercession before God. That is to say, our challenge as disciples of Fr. d’Alzon is to imitate him in his way of holiness and to entrust to him our needs so that he can intercede for us. It seems to me that, in these last years and especially during the bicentennial year, Fr. d’Alzon has become much more a close ‘friend’ and a much more appreciated ‘spiritual father.’ In this regard, lay-people who have discovered Fr. d’Alzon have demonstrated a great enthusiasm for his person and his example of holiness and their example has pushed us religious to follow their example.

Are you confident that, in the near future, the Church will recognize the holiness of Fr. d’Alzon and we will see his beatification?

As I mentioned before, we are in the stage of the miracle which the Church requests. We have had doctors examine six cases of possible miracles. Of these, in four cases there were medical explanations for the cures. There are two cases that require more study. There are six old cases presented as possible miracles at the time the cause for beatification was first introduced some 70 years ago; we have to go back and look at these cases as well. I am confident that the Lord will soon bless us with this sign of the holiness of Fr. d’Alzon, that is to say, a miracle recognized by the Church. Actually there are a lot of people who are praying for this intention in many countries throughout the world. We are printing images of Fr. d’Alzon with the prayer requesting his beatification in eight languages. Some of the images bear a small relic (a piece of cloth taken from an article of Fr. d’Alzon’s clothing). We have distributed some 5,000 medals with the image of Our Lady of the Assumption and the face of Fr. d’Alzon. We are also printing a a booklet that will contain fifty of Fr. d’Alzon prayers.

Would you like to propose any recommendations to our readers to advance this cause?

The recommendations that I would make are the aforementioned: knowing Fr. d’Alzon better as a man of holiness so that we may imitate him in this way of holiness and to entrust to him our intentions so that he might intercede for us before the Lord.

Soon you will complete your term as assistant general. Would you like to continue this task as postulator?

I really can’t answer this question because, once I have completed my term during the general chapter in May of this year, as for all religious, I will receive a new mission entrusted to me by my superiors.

P. Julio, se te pidió hacerte postulador de la causa de la beatificación del P. Manuel d'Alzon. ¿Cómo esta experiencia te ha afectado personalmente?

La experiencia de Postulador de la causa de beatificación del Padre Manuel d’Alzon ha sido muy rica para mí. Pienso que lo ha sido sobre todo en tres aspectos. Primero, me ha hecho conocer mejor al Padre d’Alzon, su personalidad, su espiritualidad, su testimonio de santidad, y junto con conocerlo mejor, creo que ahora lo admiro y lo amo mucho más. Otro aspecto se relaciona con la función misma de Postulador, que me ha obligado a aprender, estudiar, ir a cursos, sobre todo en el campo del derecho canónico, a fin de conocer los procedimientos jurídicos exigidos por la Iglesia. Y en tercer lugar, he tenido que investigar varios supuestos milagros. Esto ha sido tal vez lo más interesante, porque he recibido el testimonio de personas que están convencidas, digan lo que digan los médicos, de haber sido sanadas gracias a la oración y a la intercesión del Padre Manuel d’Alzon,

¿Dónde estamos ahora en este proceso?

El Padre d’Alzon fue declarado “Venerable” por el Papa Juan Pablo II, es decir, la Iglesia reconoce oficialmente, después de una larga investigación de su vida y de sus escritos, que este Siervo de Dios vivió las virtudes cristianas y los consejos evangélicos de manera eminente, ejemplar, e incluso heroica. Ahora el paso siguiente es demostrar ante las instancias de la Iglesia la existencia de un milagro atribuido al Padre d’Alzon. Estoy impresionado por la cantidad de gente que nos escribe diciendo que han recibido tal o cual favor, gracias a la intercesión del Padre d’Alzon. Los milagros los hace Dios. Y los da gratuitamente, no por nuestros méritos o porque hayamos rezado mucho o poco. Pero en la Iglesia Católica tenemos la convicción de fe de que la Virgen María, los Santos y los seres queridos que están junto a Dios pueden interceder por nosotros para que el Señor nos conceda lo que le pedimos.

Los milagros que la Iglesia reconoce como tal son generalmente (aunque no exclusivamente) curaciones de enfermedades incurables. Tiene que ser demostrado por los médicos que no hay una explicación científica, que la curación fue repentina y definitiva (que perdura al menos después de cinco años) y que se pidió explícitamente con oraciones (por ejemplo, durante una Novena) la intercesión del Siervo de Dios.

Acabamos de terminar el bicentenario del nacimiento del P. d'Alzon. ¿Esta conmemoración ha afectado la causa de la beatificación y cómo?

Sí, este año del bicentenario ha sido una ocasión privilegiada para dar a conocer mejor al Padre d’Alzon. Lo novedoso, creo yo, ha sido el acento puesto en su santidad. En el pasado hemos insistido mucho en la figura del Padre  d’Alzon como gran apóstol del siglo XIX, o como educador, o como fundador de dos Congregaciones religiosas (los Asuncionistas y las Oblatas de la Asunción), o como luchador y defensor de los derechos de la Iglesia en una sociedad hostil a ella. Este año hemos querido conocer mejor y dar a conocer al hombre “santo”, modelo de santidad para sus religiosos y religiosas, pero también para los laicos que se inspiran de su espiritualidad. Su propio camino de santidad, que pasó por momentos de opciones radicales, de crisis dolorosas, de renuncias y de disponibilidad en las manos de Dios, sigue siendo hoy un ejemplo de santidad.

¿Cuáles son los logros que has visto durante los años recientes en cuanto al proceso?

Precisamente, pienso que los logros están en lo dicho anteriormente. Lo que la Iglesia nos pide finalmente, no es tanto demostrar un milagro, sino demostrar que creemos realmente en la santidad del Padre Manuel d’Alzon y que estamos convencidos de su poder de intercesión ante Dios. Es decir, nuestro desafío como discípulos del Padre d’Alzon está en imitarlo en su camino de santidad y en confiarle nuestras necesidades para que interceda por nosotros. Me parece que, en los últimos años y particularmente durante este año del bicentenario, el Padre d’Alzon se ha convertido en un “amigo” mucho más cercano y en un “padre espiritual” mucho más valorado. En esto, los laicos que descubren al Padre d’Alzon, demuestran un gran entusiasmo por su persona y por su ejemplo de santidad y nos estimulan a los religiosos a seguir sus pasos.

¿Tienes confianza que en un futuro próximo la iglesia reconocerá la santidad del P. d'Alzon?

Como dije anteriormente, estamos en la etapa del milagro que pide la Iglesia. Hemos hecho examinar por los médicos seis casos de posibles milagros. De éstos, en cuatro casos la curación se puede explicar por las intervenciones médicas. Hay dos casos que todavía requieren mayor estudio. Hay seis casos antiguos, presentados como posibles milagros en el momento en que se introdujo la causa de beatificación hace unos setenta años; estos casos también tenemos que volver a examinarlos hoy. Confío en que el Señor nos regalará pronto este signo de la santidad del Padre d’Alzon, es decir, el milagro reconocido por la Iglesia. Hay mucha gente que reza actualmente por esta intención en muchos países del mundo. Estamos imprimiendo imágenes del Padre d’Alzon con la oración para pedir su beatificación, en ocho idiomas. Algunas de estas imágenes llevan una pequeña reliquia (un trocito de tela sacado de una vestimenta usada por el Padre d’Alzon). Hemos distribuido unas cinco mil medallas con la imagen de la Virgen de la Asunción y el rostro del Padre d’Alzon. También estamos editando un librito con cincuenta oraciones del Padre d’Alzon.

¿Hay recomendaciones que a tí te gustaría proponer a nuestros lectores para avanzar el proceso?

Las recomendaciones que puedo hacer son las que ya dije antes: Conozcamos mejor al Padre d’Alzon como hombre “santo”, a fin de imitarlo en su camino de santidad, y confiémosle nuestras intenciones para que él  interceda por nosotros ante el Señor.

Pronto, terminarás tu mandato como asistente general. ¿Te gustaría mantener tu compromiso en este asunto?

A esta pregunta no puedo responder, porque terminado mi mandato durante el Capítulo General (en mayo de 2011), como todo religioso, quedo a disposición de la nueva misión que me confíen mis Superiores.
