On the occasion of the centenary of Assumptionist presence in Chile (1990), there arose some thought about founding a community in a Latin American country where weren't yet located. The General Chapter of 1993 "gave its approval and encouraged the idea of an interprovincial Latin American foundation as a concrete expression of the missionary spirit of the Congregation." Three countries were considered and visited: Bolivia, Paraguay and Ecuador. In the end we chose Ecuador and the diocese of Riobamba since the bishop's proposal seemed most in line with our apostolic project.

On January 27, 1996 we signed a contract with the bishop of Riobamba and on July 26, 1996, the first three Assumptionist missionaries arrived in Riobamba, having been welcomed in Quito a few days earlier by the Religious of the Assumption. There were Fr. Jean-Pierre Bouteil and Br. Cristián Céspedes who came from Chile to begin to put into place the plans which had been elaborated. On the 23rd of the following month, Br. Marquinhos  Bento da Souza, who would later become provincial of Brazil, joined the group. The three were to favor the missionary spirit and interprovincial collaboration among all Assumptionists living in Latin America, to be signs of hope in the future,  to issue a call to young people to take new initiatives, to plant the spirit and the charism of the Assumption in another Latin American country, and to seek out vocations there.

During these 14 years, 17 religious have been part of this community at different times. An Ecuadorian Assumption has begun to take birth. The first Ecuadorian Assumptionist, Marco Silva, was recently ordained and has become a member of the community in Riobamba. Another Ecuadorian, José Luis Lata, is currently studying theology and doing his formation in Chile. Here in Riobamba a third candidate is living with us and has already completed philosophy studies.

Our work is quite varied: we are responsible for two parishes; we began and continue to run the local Catholic radio station; we are involved in youth and vocation ministry;  we serve as chaplains and spiritual directors for various orders of sisters; we help out at the seminary as professors and spiritual directors; we have reach out activities for those in need (family crises, poverty, etc.); we support small Christian communities and help out in any way we can in the diocese. 

What have people told us that they appreciate most about our presence? Our witness to religious life, our love of the Church, our serviceability  and solid training, our willingness to serve and train the lay ministers, priests and religious of the local church, our international  spirit, as a congregation, and our qualities of nearness to people,  our simplicity, our selflessness, our freedom, our happiness and  our collaboration with the laity.

This foundation is the fruit of a joint effort of all the communities present in Latin America: Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. It hasn't always been easy to find the men we need for this mission, but now, after 14 years of presence in this land of the Andes,  we can  say that  our original goals continue to take root.

EN TIERRAS ANDINAS

Con ocasión de los 100 años de presencia de nuestra Congregación en Chile, 1990, se comenzó a pensar en un proyecto de fundación en algún país latinoamericano donde todavía no estuviéramos presentes. El Capítulo general de 1993 “dio su apoyo e incentivó la idea de una fundación interprovincial latinoamericana, como concreción del espíritu misionero de la Congregación”. Se visitó Bolivia, Paraguay y Ecuador. Optamos finalmente por Ecuador y por la diócesis de Riobamba porque la oferta del Sr. Obispo nos ha parecido más acorde con nuestro proyecto.

El 27 de enero de 1996 se firmó el contrato entre el Obispo de Riobamba y la Congregación y el 26 de julio de 1996 llegaban a la ciudad de Riobamba los primeros misioneros asuncionistas, acogidos en Quito por las religiosas de la Asunción. Eran el P. Jean-Pierre Bouteil y el Hno Cristián Céspedes que viajaron desde Chile para poner en práctica los objetivos propuestos. El entonces H. Marquinhos, que luego fuera provincial de Brasil, se integró desde Brasil el 23 del mes siguiente.   Los tres debían favorecer el espíritu misionero y la colaboración al interior de la Asunción latinoamericana; ser signos de esperanza en el futuro y llamado a los jóvenes a crear algo nuevo; encarnar el espíritu y el carisma de la Asunción y acoger vocaciones en otro país de América latina.

En estos 14 años, 17 religiosos han formado parte de esta comunidad en diferentes momentos. Y la Asunción ecuatoriana comienza a hacerse realidad. Contamos con el primer sacerdote asuncionista, el P. Marco Silva que actualmente integra la comunidad de Riobamba. En Chile se encuentra José Luis Lata, que se encuentra estudiando la teología y en proceso de formación en Chile. En nuestra comunidad de Riobamba, hay un tercer candidato que ha realizado ya sus estudios de filosofía.

Nuestro trabajo es muy variado: somos responsables de dos parroquias, dimos origen y continuamos a cargo de la radio católica, tenemos actividades de pastoral juvenil y vocacional, animación de la Vida religiosa, servicio al seminario de la diócesis como profesores o acompañantes de vida espiritual, acompañamiento al pueblo sufrido (desintegración familiar, pobreza...), construcción de comunidad y algunas capellanías y servicios puntuales.

La Asunción se hace sentir por nuestro testimonio de vida religiosa, la fidelidad a la Iglesia, disponibilidad y buena preparación, comunión y servicio a los agentes laicos, presbíteros y religiosos de la Iglesia local, comunión en la internacionalidad, y nuestras actitudes de cercanía, sencillez, desinterés, libertad, alegría y formación de laicos.

Esta fundación es el fruto de un trabajo conjunto de todas las comunidades presentes ya en América latina: Chile, Argentina, Brasil, Colombia y México. No siempre ha sido fácil contar con efectivos para esta misión pero, a los catorce años de presencia en estas tierras andinas, podemos decir que los objetivos se han ido cumpliendo.
