The Assumption Language Center started along side the delegation’s Martin Yen Residence Program for Asian seminarians, religious and priests in July 2009 by providing English language training to the Martin Yen residents. Since then, the center has extended its services to other religious, seminarians and priests of other religious congregations and communities due to a perceived need to provide contextualized language training for this specific clientele.
As a language center, the Assumption Language Center is unique among its kind. It does not only aim for language proficiency among its clientele but also tries to nurture a fraternal atmosphere among peoples of varied cultural, socio-economic and religious backgrounds. The diversity of the center’s student body makes it a perfect ground for exchange, sharing and mutual enrichment among its students, teachers and staff.
The center offers developmental English instruction in three progressive levels where competencies in speaking, listening, reading, writing including grammar are taught:
VIA (Way) – for beginners who are finding ways to acquire language skills
VERITAS (Truth) – for students with an intermediate level of language skills seeking to deepen their quest for truth
VITA (Life) – for students with advanced level of language seeking to foster life in their leadership roles
Enrichment classes are customized to cater to the needs of the students which include:
*Vocabulary, Study and Research Skills
*Media, Theater and Literary Skills
*Communicative, Social and Religious Leadership Skills
*Creative and Technical Writing
*Speech and Communication
Preparation for Entrance Exams, TOEFL and IELTS(*)
Like its student body, the center’s pool of educators is also diverse. Some are lay professionals and some are religious themselves. Bros. Ricky, Blair and Ellis give enrichment classes every Tuesday and Thursday. Aside from this, Bro. Ricky serves as the Director of the center while Bro. Rodel is its Finance Coordinator.
The Assumption Language Center has designed its program in three cycles of twelve weeks (July – September; October – December; January – March). In the course of less than a year, the student would have gone through the three group levels. The number of students per class is never more than 10 persons. At present there are 19 students are enrolled in the different English classes.
The Assumption Language Center continues to work as a pioneering Christ-centered and community-oriented language center for future servant-leaders of the Church and society in Asia.
