FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISAPPEARANCE OF BROTHERS CARLOS AND RAUL (1976-2016) PDF Print E-mail

FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISAPPEARANCE OF BROTHERS CARLOS AND RAUL (1976-2016)This past Saturday, July 2, 2016, a contingent of Assumptionists, family, and friends went to the Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Manuelita de San Miguel, in response to an invitation from the local Comisión de la Memoria por los desaparecidos (neighborhood Commission of Remembrance for the Disappeared), those who disappeared during the dictatorship of the years 1976 and 1982.

The invitation included a Mass in the nearby chapel of St. Francis Xavier where two of our Assumptionist brothers, Carlos Antonio Di Pietro and Raúl Rodríguez, had worshiped regularly Their ministry back in that period was social outreach in this neighborhood under the direction of Jesuits stationed at the Colegio Mäximo, whose director was a certain  Fr. Jorge Bergoglio.

40 years have passed since that fateful day of their disappearance, June 4, 1976, although the chapel and other buildings and rooms seem hardly to have changed.... apart from a few modifications to the chapel and the former Assumptionist house.

From Monday, June 26, till Friday, July 1, the members of the Mexico territory gathered at a rustic retreat center run by the Misoneras Marianitas for their annual retreat under the direction of Fr. John Franck, AA, assistant general, who was on his way from the meetings of the Plenary General Council held earlier in the month in Pinhal, Brazil, to the international Assumptionist education congress to be held in mid-July at Assumption College, in Worcester, Massachusetts (USA).

The retreat house lies along a picturesque stretch of the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Veracruz, known as the Costa Esmeralda (the Emerald Coast), having gained its name because of the sparkling green waters it features the length of its more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) of white sand beaches.

Blessing of new mosaics at St. Peter-in-GallicantuJuly 1, 2016 - Jerusalem

Tuesday evening, June 28, a hundred guests gathered at the bottom of the holy staircase outside the Assumptionist shrine of St. Peter-in-Gallicantu in Jerusalem to begin the celebration of First Vespers on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. Fr. Jean Daniel Gullung, AA, rector of the shrine, opened the ceremony which was presided by the Most Rev. Joseph Jules Zerey, the Greek Melkite Catholic archbishop and Vicar apostolic of Jerusalem. Rev. Msgr Matteo de Mori, First secretary of the apostolic nunciature of Jerusalem, and the Very Rev. Charles Galichet, Abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Abu Gosh, attended the service as did the two Benedictine communities of the city.

A piece that completes the work of Fr. Boubet, AA, builder of the current church

After the introduction, the congregation climbed the stairs (used by Jesus himself the night of Holy Thursday after his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemani) and entered the church in order to sing the psalms. The blessing of the new mosaics took place at the end of the Vespers service.

Assumption College to Host International Education Congress PDF Print E-mail

Assumption CollegeFirst-ever Congress of Assumptionist Educators will take place July 17-27 on College’s Worcester Campus; Former U.S. Ambassador to Speak

WORCESTER, MA (June 30, 2016) — The Venerable Father Emmanuel d’Alzon, founder of the Assumptionists and the Oblate Sisters of the Assumption, was convinced that the best way “to strengthen the flagging spirits and heal the moral fatigue” in his own day was a solid education enlivened by a genuine love of the truth and inspired by the light of the Gospel. Convinced as they are that education plays a crucial role in shaping the hearts and minds of young and old, approximately 70 Assumption educators—men and women, lay people and religious, from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North and South America—will gather for the first time from July 17-27 at Assumption College, 500 Salisbury St. in Worcester, to reflect together on Father d’Alzon’s educational insights and to help each other put these principles to work in their own institutions.

FATHER GENERAL ADDRESSES COMMITTEE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BEATIFICATION OF FATHER D'ALZON PDF Print E-mail

Emmanuel d’AlzonIn late May the newly renovated committee responsible for the beatification of our founder, Servant of God Emmanuel d’Alzon, met at the general house in Rome under the leadership of the postulator of the cause, Fr. Julio Navarro.

During the meeting Fr. General, Fr. Benoit Griere, took time to address the committee members. He first thanked them for their willingness to serve on the committee. He told them that whenever he makes canonical visits somewhere in the Assumptionist world, he is almost always asked how the cause for the beatification of Fr. d’Alzon is going. In Fr. Benoit’s opinion, this interest demonstrates a real desire to see this happen and a willingness to collaborate. Even if Fr. d’Alzon was a man of discretion, there is no doubt that we Assumptionists would be delighted to see the day that the Church recognized his holiness publicly. He particularly thanked Fr. Julio for his dedication and enthusiasm.

« For us, believing in the founder’s holiness is to believe in our own personal holiness. The way he walked is our way today --- in how we pray, educate, recruit, carry out our ministry, engage in ecumenical work. His way of holiness is our way, » Fr. Benoit said.

ASSUMPTION COLLEGE MBA CLASS - DOING BUSINESS IN ITALY PDF Print E-mail

ASSUMPTION COLLEGE MBA CLASS - DOING BUSINESS IN ITALYBY MATTHEW BRINGHAM

The US Embassy in Rome was impressive, with their headquarters previously being a castle for a Princess of Savoy. The representative was informative about the Italian and world affairs, most notably saying that Italy from North-Central-South is similar to Germany, Portugal, and Greece. Oddly enough, the average Italian has more net worth than the average German, which can be attributed to their high investment in low risk low return investments, such as real estate and art.

The security for entering the Bank of Italy was considerably lower. The representative held a Ph.D. in economics, who was more optimistic than most about the recovery of the Italian economy. I preferred the discussion with the previous day, since I am not too interested in monetary policy. In addition, we toured parts of the Vatican, including a 500+ step climb to the top of Saint Peter’s. This was a great view, despite the work needed to reach the top.
