- Would you share a bit about your background: family, childhood, early education etc.?
- My name is Hugo Fernando Morales Ballesteros. I was born in Manzanares Caldas, Colombia, in 1976. I am the second child among four siblings. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the St. Thomas University and a Bachelor of Theology from the St. Bonaventure University in Bogota, Colombia. I specialized in Pedagogy. I wrote two books on the Teaching of Philosophy. I have worked as campus minister and secondary teacher for subjects related to Philosophy, Religion and Humanities. My parents have been a source of inspiration. Their faith has taught me that the purpose of life is to believe, to hope, and to strive. They have a great devotion to the Blessed Mother. It was in this atmosphere of faith and involvement in the Church that I received God’s call to the religious life.

Mother Church gives us every year the opportunity to celebrate Pentecost, fifty days after Easter in memory of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. But, this year, this feast was not celebrated in parishes as usual because of the disease commonly called Corona Virus or the Covid19. It came quite suddenly, changed the usual ritual of our celebrations and the very lifestyle of our societies. The disaster caused by this disease has affected most nations and its victims are increasing every day all over the world. To avoid this wave of covid19 contamination, many countries have taken various preventive measures among which are a ban on going out, touching or greeting others, Church services are suspended, schools and universities have closed and students have been sent back to their families.

When I was a kid, without giving it a whole lot of thought, we used to speak of “going to communion.” It amounted to leaving one’s pew at “communion time” to get the wafer. If that sounds crude, how’s this: we were always interested when the Church gave out stuff: ashes on Ash Wednesday, palms on Palm Sunday, and “communion,” alas, at every Mass. So much for the commodification of the liturgy.
Who knew that “going to communion” had untold depths of meaning? Of all the theological developments that helped prepare the liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council, the restoration and subsequent enrichment of the understanding of communion was of the first order of importance. There was, to begin with, the connection between communion and life. The biblical teaching is oriented in this direction: where there is life rich in relationship, there is found life in the full. Where there is isolation, life seeps away.
