They say that "to sing is to pray twice" and that is what has inspired a 35 year old tradition at the Assumptionist shrine of Lourdes in Santiago. On Saturday, February 4, 1977, more than 35 singers came to sing at the feet of the Virgin.

They came from small towns from Valparaiso to Curicó. They had been invited to this well-known shrine to mark its 70^th anniversary. "There were two women and a young man, Arnoldo Madariaga, who planted the seeds of a tradition that would last to this day," recalled Br. Ramón Gutiérrez, A.A., one of the organizers of the 1977 event.

 "Today," he added, "Arnoldo Madariaga is one of the most famous singers of religious music in Chile." For over thirty years this event has taken place uninterrupted at the shrine in the nation's capital city and is an attempt to save a tradition that is over 400 years old and whose origins date back to the arrival of the Jesuits in central Chile.

In the first years of the nation's evangelization it was missionaries who taught the words of the songs, but soon this task fell to native converts, to mixed blood and Spanish residents, who adopted and adapted the tradition, often-times composing their own songs. 

 This past February 4, some 50 singers gathered at the shrine of Lourdes and formed a circle to sing to the Virgin, accompanied by guitars and guittarons (large guitars). They began their singing at 8 P.M. and continued into the wee hours of the morning. Sunday at the shrine the novena will continue with some of the singers participating in a review of salvation history in song.

Dicen que el que canta, “ora dos veces”, y así lo entendió have 35 años el equipo pastoral del Santuario de Lourdes. El sábado 4 de febrero de 1977 llegaron hasta los pies de la Virgen más de 35 cantores a lo divino, provenientes de pequeños poblados desde Valparaíso hasta Curicó. Respondían así a la invitación para unirse a las celebraciones de los 70 años de la gruta en nuestro país. “Dos mujeres fueron las responsables de colocar la nota femenina en esa primera reunión, mientras que un adolescente Arnoldo Madariaga fue el que alentó la esperanza de que esta tradición continuara en nuestros campos hasta el día de hoy”, recuerda el hermano Ramón Gutiérrez, uno de los organizadores del encuentro en 1977. “Madariaga es actualmente uno de los principales exponentes del canto a lo divino en Chile”, agrega. Durante tres décadas, el encuentro se ha realizado de manera ininterrumpida en la gruta capitalina y buscar rescatar una tradición que tiene más de 400 años y cuyo origen se asocia a la llegada de los jesuitas a la zona central. En los primeros años de evangelización, fue el misionero el que enseñó los versos, pero poco a poco los criollos, como los mestizos y españoles que permanecieron en Chile, hicieron suyo el método y comenzaron a componer sus propios versos. Uno de los impulsores de que los cantores ingresaran a la iglesia fue el padre Miguel Jordá, que en ese tiempo vivía en Villa de Alhué”. Hasta la Gruta de Lourdes (Lourdes 645, Quinta Normal) llegarán hoy más de 50 cantores, que se reunirán en círculo para cantarle a la Virgen, acompañados de guitarras y guitarrones. Desde las 20:00 horas y hasta la madrugada del domingo realizarán con su canto un recorrido por la historia de la salvación, todo esto en el marco de la Novena de la Virgen de Lourdes.
