After we closed the communities of Cáceres in 2003 and Almería in 2005, the members of the Province felt that we were concentrating our forces too much in the Madrid area. Given this reality and the arrival of Congolese brothers to work with us, we thought it advisable to open ourselves to new horizons. After the various communities discussed the matter as well as the Council of the Province, we decided in August 2009 to name a committee of 4 religious together with the provincial to look for a site within another diocese where we had never been before.

Here are the criteria we fixed for the new foundation:

• that they be dioceses not too far from Madrid to allow easy access

• that there be young people and that we might be able to work with them

• that there be universities in the area in case we wanted  (and could) send young religious there

• that there was a need for the presence of religious

• that we be allowed to work as a team of religious and that the local clergy be open to our collaboration

• that we be invited to take responsibility for some ministry (whether it be a parish or something else).

The committee sent a letter to each of the five dioceses that we felt might fit the criteria. Of those, only three sent a response. After making several visits to each diocese and studying in detail the various offers we received, we chose the Diocese of  Orihuela-Alicante, and within this diocese, the city of Elche.

In Elche, we were offered two parishes together, one next to the other. The larger of the two, San Antón, is located in a rather large neighborhood in which you find the city stadium and a number of social centers. The other, Espíritu Santo, is smaller in size, but the city hospital and playgrounds are there.

Both parishes have their own history and both have been marked by the many priests who have served in them. Each one has had its ups and downs.  But in both, what is impressive is the presence of many committed lay-people, often-times with extensive training, ready and willing to collaborate with us.

In San Antón, Fr. Michaël is the pastor and Fr. Ángel is the associate. In Espíritu Santo I am the pastor. But it has to be said that from the start we wanted to form a team of the three of us in such a way that all of us would collaborate in the organization of the Masses of the two parishes and in a third worship site that was entrusted to us. We wanted collaboration in the formation of lay helpers, in catechetical programs, visitation of the sick, etc....

Not to be forgotten is the presence of a group of religious sisters, the Misioneras Cruzadas de la Iglesia, who work closely with us.

In general it can be said that both parishes needed fresh blood and the arrival of a religious community has been well received, especially by those persons who have been really involved in the life of the Church. For the last 4 years one priest had been responsible for both parishes, and, from we have been told, he simply couldn’t keep up with all the various pastoral demands.

We have also been well received in the local deanery. Once a month we get together with the other priests of the city at a local retreat center. We pray together, we exchange news, we spend the morning with each other, and then we enjoy a meal together.

We extend an invitation to any Assumptionist who might be visiting Spain to drop by and see us. We are only four hours by car from Madrid and there are a lot of  “low cost”  flights  which connect us to the rest of the world.  Know that you are always welcome here!

Nueva Comunidad en Alicante (España)

Desde que se cerraron las comunidades de Cáceres (año 2003) y de Almería (año 2005), la Provincia se había visto cada vez más concentrada en Madrid. Ello junto con la presencia de nuevos hermanos del Congo, nos hacía pensar que sería bueno abrirnos a otras realidades. Así después de reflexionarlo en las comunidades y luego en el Consejo de Provincia decidimos crear una Comisión en Agosto de 2009 formada por 4 religiosos más el P. Provincial para hacer una búsqueda en otras diócesis de España en las que hasta ahora no estábamos.

Los criterios fueron los siguientes:

• que sean diócesis relativamente cercanas a Madrid, para podernos comunicar con facilidad.
• que haya jóvenes y se pueda trabajar con ellos.
• que cuenten con universidad y centros de estudios para el caso de que queramos, ¡y podamos!, enviar religiosos jóvenes allí.
• que esté necesitadas de una presencia de la Vida Religiosa
• que podamos trabajar en equipo los religiosos que vayamos allí, y con los sacerdotes del lugar.
• que nos ofrezcan tener un lugar (parroquia u otro) de trabajo propio.

La Comisión envió una carta a cada una de las 5 diócesis que pensábamos podían reunir tales condiciones. De ellas solamente 3 respondieron. Tras hacer varias visitas y estudiar con detalle las ofertas que nos hacía cada una de esas 3 diócesis, decidimos optar por la de Orihuela-Alicante, y dentro de ella, por la ciudad de Elche.

En Elche nos ofrecieron dos parroquias, que están ubicadas una junto a la otra. La más grande, San Antón, está en un barrio amplio en extensión, en su demarcación se encuentra el estadio de fútbol de la ciudad y diversos centros sociales. La del Espíritu Santo es más reducida en extensión, pero en su territorio se encuentran los Juzgados de la ciudad y el Hospital General.

Ambas parroquias están muy marcadas por la historia y por los diversos sacerdotes que han ido pasando por ellas, cada uno, lógicamente, con sus luces y sus sombras. Pero su gran potencial se encuentra en los numerosos laicos comprometidos, y en muchos casos, con mucha formación, que colaboran en ellas.

En San Antón, el P. Michaël, es el párroco, y el P. Ángel, es el vicario parroquial. En el Espíritu Santo yo soy el párroco. Pero hay que decir que desde el principio hemos querido hacer equipo entre los 3 religiosos, de tal manera que todos colaboramos en la animación de las eucaristías de las 2 parroquias, y de un tercer lugar de culto que nos ha sido confiado, así como en los grupos de formación, visitadores de enfermos, catequistas...

Cabe señalar también, la presencia en nuestros barrios de una comunidad de Misioneras Cruzadas de la Iglesia que trabaja muy estrechamente con nosotros.

En líneas generales se puede decir que ambos barrios estaban muy necesitados de una presencia sacerdotal y la llegada de una comunidad de religiosos ha sido muy bien acogida por todos, especialmente por aquellas personas que más implicadas están en la vida de la comunidad cristiana. Durante los últimos 4 años un sólo sacerdote se había encargado de ambas parroquias, y por lo que nos cuentan, no daba a basto para atender todas las necesidades pastorales.

En la Vicaría también hemos sido muy bien acogidos. Una vez al mes nos encontramos con los sacerdotes de la ciudad en una casa de ejercicios. Tenemos un tiempo de oración, intercambiamos informaciones, pasamos la mañana juntos y concluimos con una comida fraterna.

Invitar, finalmente a todos aquellos hermanos asuncionistas que alguna vez pasen por España a que nos hagan una visita. Estamos a tan sólo 4 horas de automóvil desde Madrid, y no faltan los vuelos “Low cost” que nos comunican con el resto del mundo. ¡Seréis los bienvenidos!
