A SURPRISING NEW CHAPTER: WELCOMING HAITIAN MIGRANTS IN EL PASO, TX PDF Print E-mail

.

Haitian migrants began arriving at our temporary shelter for families in El Paso, TX, and the local Assumptionist community alongside many dedicated volunteers is working around the clock to serve these men, women and children who come to us in need.

Two groups have come and gone in the span of three short days. Each group has about 50 individuals, composed mostly of small families. As we served a simple dinner we quickly learned that, for many of the migrants, it was their first meal in five or six days. They are incredibly grateful to accept the small things we offer them - a roof over their heads, a dry blanket, a shower - the basic necessities that we tend to take for granted.

.

Providentially, we began welcoming migrants just before the feast of Saint Vincent de Paul, a French Catholic priest who spent his life in service to the poor. St. Vincent tells us, “Go to the poor: you will find God,” and that has certainly been the case for us. Through this service to the poorest among us, we discover the face of Christ who lived a simple, poor life on earth.

While we suffer knowing the difficulties that the Haitian migrants have faced so far (violence, forced separations, lack of food, water, and shelter, etc.) we rejoice that we have the opportunity to serve them in their moment of need.

.

As these groups continue to arrive, we ask for your prayers and any support you can provide so that these migrants may continue to be welcomed as Christ himself. God bless you!
