WORCESTER, MA (March 8, 2017)—In celebration of the College’s partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), a global humanitarian organization, Assumption College’s Office of Campus Ministry will focus on the theme of migration during this Lenten season. Opportunities to learn about Catholic teaching on migration, to pray for migrants, and advocate on behalf of migrants will be made available through a number of events:
- Screening of The Vigil
Tuesday, March 21, 7-9 p.m.
Room 112 (Alden Trust Auditorium), Kennedy Hall
The Vigil is told from the viewpoint of a female immigrant, Gina, and a small group of her fellow undocumented single mothers, Rosa and Maria, who live in fear of deportation in the state of Arizona. Unwilling to just merely survive, Gina becomes a leader of a vigil and her journey to create refuge for the immigrant community in the face of Arizona’s groundbreaking anti-immigration law takes her all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The filmmakers describe it as “a story of those who are not considered American, making American history.” Director Jenny Alexander and film advisor on immigration issues, Alexandra Piñeros Shields, will introduce the film and answer questions afterwards.
A candlelight prayer will follow the event at 9 p.m. in the Assumption College Chapel.

Assumption College Associate Professor of Spanish Esteban Loustaunau, Ph.D., will speak about how he integrates faith in his life within the context of his own immigration to the United States from his native Mexico.
- Way of the Cross for Migration
Friday, March 31, 4 p.m.
Depart from Assumption College Chapel
The annual Lenten Stations of the Cross will also focus on migration. Starting at the Chapel, participants will walk across campus, stopping at various locations to learn and to pray. It will conclude at the Chapel in time for the 5 p.m. Mass.
- CRS “Teach-In” on Migration
Sunday, April 2, 2:30 p.m.
Hagan Hall, Hagan Campus Center
Assumption faculty members will join with the College’s CRS Student Ambassadors to use the CRS Faculty Learning Commons, the ‘I am Migration’ awareness campaign, and the CRS ‘CST 101’ video series to help participants engage with migration particularly as it relates to Catholic social thought.
- · Migration Walk
Sunday, April 9th (time and location TBA)
Participants will walk in the footsteps of a typical migrant, stopping at 10 stations across campus.
In addition to the events, images of migrants who have been served by CRS will be displayed on a barren tree in the Chapel sanctuary throughout Lent, which will encourage the campus community to remember these sisters and brothers in God’s family whenever Mass is celebrated.. In the midst of these images is the 1951 woodcut entitled ‘Jesus in the Breadline’ by Fritz Eichenberg. Here, Jesus stands amidst the poor and hungry who, like migrants, seek rest, fulfillment and an end to their suffering.
Events are free and open to the public, and sponsored by Assumption College Campus Ministry, CRS Global Campus, and the Interdisciplinary Film Series.
