At the beginning of this year, the Assumptionist shrine in Quebec City (Montmartre canadien) launched a new website to promote its various activities: http://www.lemontmartre.ca/culture-et-foi.
Montmarte canadien, as the new site explains, is a place to encounter Christ through prayer, listening to the Word of God, reflection, and fellowship. The center is run by the Assumptionists and their lay collaborators. It seeks to reach those individuals, especially the young, who wish to deepen their faith or return to the Christian faith by joining a Christian community that focuses three areas:
+ developing an adult faith
+ nourishing an interior life
+ providing opportunities for celebration and fellowship.
Throughout the year the shrine offers a wide variety of programs including Scripture classes, faith-sharing brunches, concerts, a series entitled the "Grand Dossiers" which features well-known individuals in Quebec society who reflect on their lives and the role their faith plays, an annual Bible festival, icon workshops, and an array of lectures.
The shrine was originally built in 1925 in the Sillery neighborhood of Quebec City by Fr. Marie-Clément Staub to promote devotion to the Sacred Heart. It took its name "Montmartre" from its affiliation with the original Montmarte in Paris and its world-renowned "Confraternity of Prayer and Penitence."
The shrine is perched on the high cliffs overlooking the St. Lawrence River with breath-taking vistas southward.
